students in action

Our third-graders are continuing to work hard in all of their classes, but, now that TCAP is behind them, they have found some time in their schedule to support kindergarteners. They have become Star Word Buddies for our youngest students. Third-graders disperse among the three kindergarten classrooms four mornings each week in order to help them learn their sight words. They are demonstrating both skill and patience in working with their kindergarten buddies and the data show that they are having an impact.

teachers in action
CDE is traveling around the state to film classrooms in multiple subject areas and all grade levels. A range of teacher performance will be captured from teaching practice. The
Colorado Department of Education is creating a rich database of classroom practice that will
be used to train teacher evaluators and inform other educators about effective
teaching. CDE is creating a library that will consist of videos of teachers needing improvement to exemplary practice in order to offer a video library useful to many needs and situations. CDE's belief is that the video library will become one of the most valuable online resources available to educators seeking to improve teaching practice, which results in improved student achievement. Once again, we are on the cutting edge, participating in the videotaping process. Haskin Elementary teachers Andrew Hawkins, Gabriel Swanson, Zoraya Vazquez, Colleen Hurst, Jessica Stevens and Ashley Lane were among the brave souls that were videotaped. Thank you all for participating in this nerve wracking experience!
Haskin Elementary teachers worked in subject alike vertical teams to review
the action plans that they composed at the beginning of the school year. The
teachers cross checked their plans with their actions to see if they met the
strategies set forth. Haskin teachers also took some time to amend their action
plans for next year's instruction. This was a very productive use of time.

“Bottoms Up, Heads Together!” “Cha-Ching, you’re a winner!” “Pick a Card, Any Card!” If you walk through the hallways of Center School District, these are just a few of the Kagan phrases that you will hear spilling out of classrooms. Last week Haskin Elementary School 2nd-3rd grade teacher Ashley Lane was accepted as a Kagan Cooperative Learning trainee. With Ashley becoming a Kagan School Trainer, our intentional focus on the implementation of Kagan structures in our classrooms will ensure future success. . Congratulations Ashley. We know Kagan has very high standards when it comes to accepting potential trainers!
Setting a good example
Take a look at Mr. Hawkin's lunch tray. You could not fit one more vegetable on there if you tried! With an increased emphasis on health and wellness, our great cafeteria staff is providing more fresh fruits and vegetables for students and staff. Having them available is only half of the recipe for improved health, however. One must still choose to put them on the plate and eat them. Andy is setting a great example for others to follow. Now, maybe he could go a little bit easier on the condiments and Ranch dressing, but that could just be a matter of opinion....just saying.... :-)
