teachers in actionIt takes a great deal of effort to plan and execute a PBIS Good Behavior Event. A team of teachers, Mr. Swanson, Mrs. Abbott, Ms. Zoraya, and Ms. Lopez brainstormed ideas and decided on organizing games of kick ball for those students who did not receive orange slips or office referrals during the months of March and April. Ms. Montoya contributes her time by keeping track and reporting who is eligible to participate and who is not. The actual event requires classroom teachers to stay behind and continue instruction. Other classroom teachers, along with specials teachers and Teacher Assistants supervise the event.

students in action
We would like to recognize the entire first-grade class for their behavior. They, by far, outperformed every other grade level. Only four students were ineligible for the PBIS event! Not only do first graders rarely get orange slips, they also have excellent classroom behavior and there was not one office referral during the last two months. Great job, first-graders and thank you for being such good students and citizens of Haskin Elementary!
If there is one thing you can say about our students, they are generous and helpful. That's actually two things, and you can add that they are also strong, as you can see from this picture. Mrs. Vance needed help hauling in snacks for After School Academy, and she found two youngsters, Cesar Hernandez and Adrian Garcia, who were up to the task. Nicely done, boys! |
core beliefs in action
We have participated, once again, in an end-of-year review by Focal Point. They took a look at various elements of our school, including progress on action plans and student performance data. An important part of the review involves classroom walkthroughs. This is an area in which we received very positive feedback. Wendy Berhanzel and Ted Knight have been visiting our school and offering guidance to us for three years now. Certainly, because we are so close to the situation, we don't have the same perspective that outside people have in looking at the processes and procedures in place at Haskin. Things that at one time were new and challenging, like writing well-aligned lesson objectives and DFA's, are now routine. Both Wendy and Ted were very impressed with the progress we have made over the last three years in both instruction and management of classrooms. The school is orderly and focused work is going on at all grade levels. Each of you is making a contribution to this positive, productive climate and it is an honor to be part of this organization. We certainly are not "there" yet. We have work to do in continuing to increase the level of engagement of all students in every lesson, and we need to continually work to raise the level of rigor throughout. It is important to recognize the success we are experiencing and enjoy the well-deserved sense of accomplishment that comes with it. However, we know we will never be satisfied with things as they are. We will continue, for the sake of each and every child under our care, to refine our practice in order to provide the education our students deserve. Thank you, one and all, for your contribution to this effort and thank you for continually demonstrating a commitment to our Core beliefs.
