students in actionFourth-graders have become Sight Word buddies to our kindergarten students and they are supporting them four days each week. Kindergarteners have the huge task of learning 100 sight words by the end of the year and they and their teachers have been working hard to reach this goal. But, it's challenging to do without lots of extra support. That's where the fourth-graders come in. They have experience as they helped kindergarteners last year, as well, when they were in third-grade. The Buddies flash cards, have students air write words, and play games with the younger students all in an effort to help them practice and learn their words. Both teachers and students are very grateful for the support.

teachers and students in action
Last week 2nd and 3rd grade Scientists learned all about the states of matter. Mrs. Abbott provided her students with a variety of activities centered around Solids, Liquids and Gases. Students were asked to describe changes they observed in the properties of materials when the materials interact with each other. What better way to do this than to make Oobleck! The students worked all week to identify the characteristic properties of each of the three states of matter and group materials on the basis of these properties-solids have definite volume and hold their shape; liquids have definite volume but take the shape of their container; gases have no definite volume and take the volume and shape of their container. Way to go Haskin Scientists!

Dental screenings
Haskin 2nd grade students learned of the importance of dental health. Students learned that caring for their teeth is just as important as caring for the rest of their body. Cleaning the teeth and gums removes plaque which contains harmful bacteria that can cause tooth decay. We are grateful to the dental team from Valley Wide Health Services for the time they took to give our students this valuable instruction as well as examining their teeth. And, as always, our students displayed respectful behavior during the lesson.
teachers in action
Last Wednesday teachers participated in vertical content PLC's. Writing teachers, pictured here, discussed monthly SWEEP writing assessments, revisions to rubrics that are needed, and spelling. They will continue to work to select anchor papers for each grade level, so both they and their students have a clear picture of what grade-level writing looks like. The reading teachers worked to select resources that they need to move students forward. Math teachers shared ways they are helping students reach fluency in math facts. They also set math fact fluency goals for each grade level and discussed how they might administer both progress monitoring and benchmark assessments. Mr. Welsh and several Board members visited the PLC's throughout the afternoon. It was truly impressive to see the work that was accomplished and the caliber of the conversations was highly professional and insightful. We look forward to having more vertical conversations during PLC's next year.
