students in action:On Thursday, April 18, the 3rd grade class traveled to Monte Vista to participate in Agriculture Safety Day! It was a wonderfully educational day-if not a bit cold and windy! One of the great things about Ag Safety Day is that most of the 3rd Grade classes from the entire San Luis Valley participate, so our students get to visit with their friends from other schools.
There were many fun and educational presentations throughout the day. The 3rd Graders learned about how to stay safe around electricity, canals and head gates, how to stay safe around farm animals, and how to properly hold a rifle (wooden, of course J). They also learned about how large trucks, tractors, and buses have blind spots, why bike helmets are important and why it is never OK to eat something if you don’t know what it is! There were also tractors, fire trucks, and an ambulance they were able to sit in! The end of the day brought some disappointment when it was time to go, but after being given a t-shirt, snacks and a huge goodie bag to take home, the students declared the day a success! 5th grade in denverBright and early Friday, April 19 the fifth grade students, teachers, and parents boarded the buses to head to Denver for their long anticipated field trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. We did several fun things including lunch at Casa Bonita, playing at City Park, going to the Denver Zoo, and shopping in the gift shops, but the highlight was the time spent at the museum.
We checked into the museum at 6:00 pm and then began our evening events. One of the events was exploring the Space Odyssey exhibit in the museum. The students learned many things about the earth, the sun and the moon throughout this exhibit. Another event was going to the planetarium to watch a presentation about wild weather on the planets. We learned which planets had dust devils like we have in the San Luis Valley and which one was made of only gas. At the Build a Bot event, students reviewed what they had learned about the planets and were challenged to design and build a model of a robot that could explore a planet. We had some very creative robots that were made for digging up soil or taking pictures. They even had miniature motors that they used to make their robots mobile. The Blast Off! event included making rockets out of film canisters and construction paper and launching them using air pressure. They were allowed many chances to change the design to see if they could improve the rocket’s performance. After a quick snack the students and their chaperones were free to visit the museum exhibits. Many of the groups started with the special exhibit “Mammoths and Mastodons: Titans of the Ice Age.” The next morning before leaving the museum we went to the IMAX theatre and saw “Titans of the Ice Age 3D”. This was a great film showing many animals that lived on earth long ago including mammoths, mastodons, saber tooth tigers and dire wolves. We returned to the school Saturday evening between 6:30 and 7:00. Everyone had a good time and represented Haskin Elementary very well. Submitted by Sheryl Pearson |
sum dog superstars!
Beginning on April 5 and ending on April 11, math students in the 2nd-5th grade classes competed in a San Luis Valley Math Competition. The competition took place online on the Sumdog website. Students log on and play games and compete against friends by answering addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, money and other types of math problems. They did very well in the contest, including being the daily winner on April 6 and taking 3rd place overall. Several individual students also placed. We had 31 students place in the top 50 with the following students being in the top 10. Obed Perez 1st, Gage Vega 3rd, Elizabeth Molina-Valadez 5th, Max Garcia 6th, Chantal Almeida 7th, Nubia Quintana 8th, Yamilex Romero 9th and Miguel Francisco-Juan 10th. The students placed by getting the most correct answers. They were allowed to answer 1000 questions. The students really enjoy playing the games and continue to ask if they can play if we have any spare time in class.

NWEA
Students at all grade levels are working to complete End of Year NWEA testing. They are putting forth their best effort. Teachers administering the assessment are also working hard to accomplish this task. Testing requires a great deal of effort: logging on, entering passwords, assigning tests, actively proctoring, and that's just for starters. Thanks to everyone for all your efforts. Good luck to first-grade and kindergarten as they take their assessments this week.
Lu and Agnes spent a few minutes last week rearranging the furniture in the elementary entrance. They just wanted to change it up a bit and make it even more welcoming. Nice job, ladies!
