Students in action:
Under the watchful eye of Honey Stecken, Haskin Elementary 4th and 5th grade scientists have been very busy learning about the scientific process through many hand on activities. Our young scientists have been learning about static electricity, electrical circuits, separating mixtures and refracting light. The students are enjoying learning in Science class this year.

Students in action:
Eight students celebrated graduation from Lindamood Bell intervention. These students worked hard and showed adequate growth on diagnostic testing to graduate. Graduating students are Priscilla Welsh, Jacquelin Aguilar, Briana Palma, Destiny DeHerrera, Fabian Chavez, Abraham Echauri, Yahir Quintana, and Eric Archuleta. Way to go, boys and girls!
Awards were also given to talented writers for this month's SWEEP assessment. Students wrote about their favorite places to be and told what they enjoy about being there. Each month it becomes more challenging to choose recipients of this award as the writing of all students is progressing at such a remarkable rate.
Winners this month are: Vanessa Lopez, kindergarten; Alicia Moreno-Ayala, first-grade; Lyric Stecken, second-grade; Giayaneli Lopez, third-grade; Yamileth Trejo-Chaparro, fourth-grade; and Priscilla Welsh, fifth-grade. Nice job, writers! Keep up the good work! |
leadership in action:
There is a new buzz word in education that will surely be on the forefront of how we educate children. The buzz word is Multi-Tiered System of Supports, also known as MTSS. What is MTSS? MTSS is whole-school, data-driven, prevention-based framework for improving learning outcomes for EVERY student through a layered continuum of evidence-based practices & systems. There are 6 components to MTSS that are listed and described below:
Shared Leadership-
The coordination of training, coaching, resources, and evaluation to support the implementation of MTSS through shared decision-making by a group of individuals who represent the school, district, and community (e.g. students, family members, general and special educators, specialists, etc.).
Data-Based Problem Solving and Decision Making-
The process used by stakeholder teams from multiple settings (e.g. home, school, community), to analyze and evaluate information related to planning and implementing effective instructional strategies matched to student need.
Layered Continuum of Support-
Culturally- and developmentally-relevant practices, that are layered from universal (all students) to targeted (groups of students) to intensive (individual students), in order to support the academic and behavioral needs of every student.
Evidence-Based Instruction, Intervention and Assessment Practices (both academic and social/behavioral)-
Teaching and learning approaches proven to be effective through scientifically-based research studies which are used to guide educational decisions to ensure improved outcomes for students.
Universal Screening and Progress Monitoring-
Universal Screening
Universal screening is a type of assessment that is characterized by the administration (usually three times a year) of quick, low-cost, repeatable data collection of academic and behavioral skills of all students. It shows how functional the curriculum and instruction are in the school and detects whether or not students are making acceptable progress in the curriculum.
Progress Monitoring
Progress monitoring is a systematic approach to gathering academic and behavioral data using a variety of data collection methods. Student performance is examined frequently, over time, to evaluate response to instruction and intervention.
Family, School, and Community Partnering-
The collaboration of families, schools, and communities as equal partners in improving learner, classroom, school, and district outcomes.
Kathy attended this professional group last year and Sarah is looking forward to attending this year. There will be a lot of information as it becomes available.
