teachers in action

On Wednesday, February 26th, teachers spent some of the early release PLC time focusing on the use of technology for instruction. Jessica Stevens provided step by step instruction on how teachers can use Apple TV and their iPads to create a document cameras. She shared the many ways she is using this tool to enhance instruction for her students. Jessica even explained how she is able to take pictures of work and create videos of her math lessons that students can access when they have been absent or when they need extra instructional time to learn a certain skill.
Following Ms. Stevens' presentation, teachers participated in a Mix, Pair, Share activity where they moved around the room, met up with various partners, and shared their favorite iPad applications. There were rich conversations, with teachers learning from one another and taking notes on the great ideas they were sharing. This early release time does pay benefits for students as teachers continue to learn new things and apply them to their instruction. |

In addition to the staff directly assigned to Haskin Elementary, there is another group of people who are committed to excellence and who support Haskin students and teachers: our library staff. Ms. Becky Reed, Mrs. Cheryl Garcia, Mrs. Carol Phillips, and Mrs. Perfecta Guadiana all contribute greatly to the work we are doing at Haskin and throughout the entire district. Here are just some of the valuable contributions they make:
We have the most highly trained school library staff in the Valley. Together they share over 60 years experience in libraries. Becky Reed has master's degree in Information and Learning Technologies with an emphasis in school libraries. Cheri Garcia is certified as a Library Tech with a specialty in cataloging. Cheri also assists with LMB groups. We are certainly fortunate to have these talented and committed people working with our students. Thanks to them for all they do.
- plan lessons which support both classroom curriculua and Standards for the 21st Century Learner
- assist in matching children to books at their reading levels
- provide curriculum-related material to teachers
- continually update the library collection with relevant materials for adults and children
- provide a safe environment for students before and after school and on weekends
- obtain materials for learning and for pleasure using interlibrary loan

On Thursday, February 27th Haskin Elementary students celebrated their positive behavior. Close to 200 children participated in two activities. In the gym, students played a variety of games in and outside of the gym such as hockey, hula hoops, sidewalk chalk, foot scooters and basketball. The students also were provided a cookie (baked by our own fabulous cafeteria staff-YUM!), some frosting and loads of sprinkles for decorating. When their works of art were perfect, the students devoured them!
There were many people involved in making sure this was a success. Thanks to Mr. Swanson and Ms. Lopez for organizing the PBIS activities. Thanks to Mr. Hawkins for arranging the PE activities. Thank you to all of the classroom teachers and teacher assistants that helped with all of the organization, supervision and cleaning. Thank you to the cafeteria staff for making the cookies and mixing the frosting. It takes a lot of people to organize a successful event, and this was one of them. Nice work team! |
