Adults in action
We have enjoyed having our new crew of AmeriCorps volunteers and we recognize that they are worth their weight in gold. Of course, the greatest impact they have is working with our students, but they also pitch in whenever asked. Here you see two of our volunteers who dug the school Christmas tree out of storage and set it up in the elementary entrance area. Their efforts contributed to the festive atmosphere of the school. Thanks, guys!
We also wish to recognize the hard work of John Noriega, Agnes Salazar, and LJ Garcia. These folks are testing close to 40 students on the full battery of Lindamood-Bell assessments. We are anticipating that several older students, who have received a great number of instructional hours, will be able to graduate, opening up slots for first- and second-grade students who have been referred to receive the intervention. This is exactly the direction in which we want to be moving. Targeting students at a younger age, when they are less than a year behind, gives us a much better chance of bringing students to grade level.
students and teachers in action
Students from kindergarten through 5th grade have been applying themselves to complete NWEA assessments. Assessing close to 300 students on multiple tests is no easy task and it certainly takes the time and commitment of many people to get it done. Classroom teachers have dealt with schedule changes as well as worked together to take groups of students to the lab for testing. Mrs. Joyce Trujillo has been a great support by helping prepare the lab, booting computers, and logging into the assessment. Students have demonstrated a commitment to excellence as they take the assessment seriously and set their sights on earning the highest scores possible. Students, teachers, and administrators alike are anxious for the testing to be completed so we can determine whether we met, or even exceeded, our mid-year goals. We will know very soon!
christmas shop 'til you drop

The Haskin Elementary Sunshine Committee hosted a Christmas Store for students to shop for gifts for their families. Events such as this are only possible when many people work together to make them happen. Our custodial staff worked to clear snow and ice from around the ARC so students and teachers could safely enter the building as well as delivering tables to be used to display the items. Also, hosting the entire elementary school would not have been possible without the tremendous help offered by Mrs. Windhorst, Mrs. Ortega, Arabia and many of our Americorps volunteers, all of whom helped arrange and stock the shelves, as well as helping students shop. The children enjoyed their experience and were excited about being able to select gifts for their families.

Christmas concerts
Congratulations to Kate Newmeyer and the 5th grade students who had their first band performance on Wednesday evening. The students warmed up in their classrooms before they hit the stage. The students performed a variety of crowd pleasing selections. Congratulations to all of the students who displayed their talents at the band concert.
Congratulations to Gabriel Swanson and the Pre-Kindergarten through 4th grade students who spread some holiday cheer to a large audience on Thursday evening. A big thanks goes to the custodial staff for an outstanding job transforming the gymnasium into a concert hall. Thank you to Mr. John Noriega, who is a critical person in running the sound system for the performance. The classroom teachers were a big help to Mr. Swanson, ushering students on and off of the risers and making sure the musical equipment was in order. Thank you to Mr. Swanson, Haskin students and all of the other people who helped make this event a success.

core beliefs in action
Our Core Beliefs are focused on the goal of helping all of our students learn and grow. Each of our students is helped and supported by many different adults during the course of each day. Our students have three or more classroom teachers committed to providing high quality instruction throughout the day. Add to that the support they receive from Teachers Assistants, ESL, and/or Special Ed. Other Specials teachers, including PE and Music, make links within their content to math and reading in order to support these core areas. When they don't feel well or have some medical need, Mrs. Burch is there to help. Mrs. Montoya and Mrs. Ortega support all of our students in various ways. Administrators offer counsel as well as consequences, when necessary. This team approach, with everyone moving in the same direction, eyes fixed securely on the goal of increasing student achievement, leads to success for our students.
This picture of Jaime with Ms. Lopez, is an example of an "Ah ha!" moment that was a result of many hours and days of intense work for this young English language learner. Jaime is growing by leaps and bounds in his ability to speak and understand a new language. He is also learning to read and write in that language. Ms. Lopez brought him by the office to demonstrate a major breakthrough he made, on the very day he understood how to read whole words, sliding through each one instead of sounding them out letter by letter. He was so pleased with his success and he understood that he had made a huge leap in his learning. This growth was a result of the effort Jaime has put forth, as well as all the adults who are working with him. These are the moments that make our work worthwhile! Well done, all!

Here is another example of some good work being done by Mr. Hawkins in PE. These first graders are learning about tempo, rhythm and rate. It's fun to watch. Enjoy! |
