teachers in action
Hmm, why a picture of a vehicle in the section entitled "Teachers In Action"? Here is why: this car was the site of perhaps the most unusual parent/teacher conference ever held at Haskin Elementary School. Two of our teachers, Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Hurst went over and above what is expected of them to meet with the mother of one of our students. Because the mother has difficulty walking to the building, these two teachers immediately agreed to go out to the car to hold the conference! Jo Ann and Colleen shared data, passing it along from the back seat to the front, and spent about a half-hour talking with this mother. This willingness to accommodate this parent is a perfect example of "teachers in action" demonstrating our core beliefs. Thank you, Jo Ann and Colleen for your generosity and sense of adventure! You made a huge impact on this mother, as she shared with me after I explained why I was taking a picture of her vehicle! She was very appreciative and grateful for your willingness to meet in her car!

americorps volunteers
Teachers and students alike are welcoming the arrival of our new team of Americorps volunteers. We have three of these folk working with students at Haskin and we couldn't be more grateful. Rebecca, Sarah and Anthony are helping kindergarteners learn sight words and supporting other students throughout the school in various ways. These volunteers jumped right in and began doing whatever was asked of them and our students are responding well to them. Many thanks to Mrs. Ruggles for the work she does in procuring these teams. We truly appreciate the help and we know it helps our students to be more successful.
Mrs. Cooper demonstrates a commitment to excellence
We want to thank Lori Cooper for the many hours she spent supporting kindergarten through third-grade teachers last week as we administered a new progress monitoring assessment to our students. Children's Progress is a new assessment tool offered through NWEA and provides a way, in addition to DIBLES, to progress monitor reading as well as a way to progress monitor students' growth in math. Lori did all the preliminary work to enter the students into the program and she also spent quite a bit of time in the computer lab logging students into their tests. The assessment provides good data on where our students are strong and where they may need more instruction. It also offers a great number of activities appropriate for remediation and acceleration of student learning. Thank you, Lori, for your generosity and commitment to our students and teachers. You are a valuable member of the team!
