This week Haskin teachers worked very hard during our PLC early release day. Teachers took the time to analyze data, digging deep and figuring out what their next steps were for kids. Teachers in grades kindergarten through second analyzed DIBELS and NWEA data, made grouping decisions, and planned instruction and interventions to meet student needs. Teachers in grades three through five did an amazing job digging in and preparing a roadmap of lessons for the next few weeks prior to administering TCAP. Haskin elementary students are lucky to have such well-prepared teachers.

Haskin Elementary teacher Honey Stecken is working hard to prepare students for the Science Fair. Every Monday after school from 3:30 to 5:30 PM, Mrs. Stecken and about 30 students are reading, writing and planning and conducting science fair projects. This year Haskin elementary students will be participating in a local science fair and hopefully in our Regional Science Fair held in Alamosa. Students are working hard to produce some of the finest science projects Haskin Elementary has ever seen. Most children are working after school more than just the one day a week. They're working almost daily to try to get their Science Fair projects completed.

Often times we are so busy that national holidays come and go with out us recognizing them. Thank you to Mrs. Hearst for recognizing Martin Luther King Jr. day and celebrating that with our students. In a study of Martin Luther King, Haskin 4th grade students learned of his fight for freedom, his fight for justice, and his fight for equality. The students at Haskin were excited to learn that in Center we have our very own hero who fights against segregation. Students learned that Mr. Welsh fought for equity in school funding for students in Center and in Colorado. They also learned that Mr. Welsh lost that battle, but that he will never give up the fight.

"Do we really have to drink ink?" "What will it taste like?" These are questions that Haskin elementary third, fourth and fifth graders are asked themselves as they started their new club called "The Ink Drinkers." The Ink Drinkers meet on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30. This group is working on learning how to write poetry, there will also be a focus on learning new vocabulary words and in-depth reading comprehension. Thank you to Mrs. Hurst for providing this wonderful opportunity for students.
