Teachers In Action
2nd-5th grade writing teachers met this week to create a continuum (K-5) of writing skills. This week, we will be piloting a School Wide Writing Equity/Effectiveness Prompt (SWEEP). Look for the amazing writing to be posted in the hallways on Friday! Thanks again to Christy Mikeljack, Colleen Hurst and Jeri Trujillo!
Welcome to Haskin! We wish to welcome Ms. Jaton Pearson to our staff. We are very grateful to the Board of Education for approving our request to hire a fourth kindergarten teacher. With 64 children enrolled in kindergarten, our three teachers have had quite large classes. Though Ms. Gonzales, Mrs. Neufeld, and Mr. Koerber are very capable teachers, it has been a challenge to give each child the attention and support necessary for them to learn and grow quickly. Adding a fourth teacher will help tremendously. Please make it a point to say hello to Ms. Pearson and welcome her to our staff.

5th Grade
5th Grade Teachers have already begun planning for the end of the year. Annually, 5th grade teachers plan an amazing overnight trip to the Museum of Natural History in Denver. They do a fabulous job arranging a fundraiser so that our students can experience this wonderful trip. The teachers took the time to hold a 5th grade class meeting to discuss staying safe selling techniques and polite ways to ask potential buyers to make a purchase. They will soon be asking staff members, in a very polite way, to buy a little something! Thanks to Sherry Pearson, Jeri Trujillo and Honey Stecken for making this possible for kids.

Haskin Elementary Writers
This week in the halls of Haskin, students were seen pausing to read the wonderful writing in the hallways. They are being respectful as they are reading the writing on the walls. Students can be seen smiling and really reading what has been posted. Students from all grades, high school and middle school included, are reading our walls. The authors are proud of their published work. If you have not had time to "read the walls," take some time to do so! It is amazing work!! This week on Friday look for the VIKING SWEEP writing in the hallways!

Physical Education
Kindergarten students are learning many different things in PE. Mr. Hawkins works to plan instruction that focuses on both fitness and skills. Lately, the children have been learning how to work together to makes various shapes with a parachute. It may just look like play, but students are getting exercise, learning to cooperate with others, listening to their teacher, visualizing what they will do next, and, oh, yeah, having fun at the same time. Watch this short video to see them in make a Mushroom! |
Core Beliefs in action
EVERYONE must be committed to excellence in ALL they do EVERY day.
There was a day in education, not very long ago, when teachers worked in isolation from one another. Classroom doors were closed, each one taught what she thought was best and in the way she thought was best. Administrators spent much of their time in their offices, managing the building and taking care of discipline issues. Support staff, paraprofessionals and office personnel, helped teachers by spending most of their time making copies of worksheets and putting up bulletin boards. No one was wrong in what they were doing, it's just the way it was.
Times have changed, and for the better! We are now part of an exciting, innovative, and successful endeavor that looks quite different from the way things used to be. Classroom doors are wide open, in fact teachers are observing one another, learning from each other and offering feedback. Administrators, including the Superintendent, are in classrooms often. Teacher Assistants, no longer called "paraprofessionals" are highly trained and presenting complex interventions to small groups of students. Office personnel are an integral part of the entire process. Center School District is being looked to as a prime example of how focused work on the right things, makes a difference for students. Day in and day out, we see people who are committed to excellence in all they do. And this attitude of excellence is spreading to our students, who are putting forth their best effort and producing quality work. Congratulations to one and all for the commitment to excellence that you show each day and thank you for your work. Let's have another productive week!
