Teachers in Action
The kindergarten team of JoAnn Lopez, Alex Gonzales, and Nicole Neufeld, has done a tremendous job starting the school year in the midst of challenge and change. With the departure of Teena Bell as she returned to Arkansas to be near her family, JoAnn stepped up to fill the ESL position here at Haskin. She is highly qualified having just completed her Masters Program and we are fortunate to have her to fill this position. JoAnn worked hard to prepare her kindergarten classroom for students, and then she graciously handed it over to Alex, who moved in and made the classroom her own. Alex and Nicole gave of their time to serve on the hiring committee and helped find the right person to join their team. They have welcomed Nate and supported him as he takes on his new responsibilities as a teacher here at Haskin. In the midst of all of this, these teachers have kept the focus on their students and have welcomed them to their new school. So, JoAnn, Alex, Nicole, and Nate, thank you for demonstrating the Core Belief that: EVERYONE must be committed to excellence in ALL they do EVERY day.
Our 4th Grade team spent the first week of school training for the Olympics! They spent time practicing valuable team building and class building skills. The team was anxiously awaiting its newest member, Jo Ann Evans. When she arrived the second week of school, the team hit the ground running making sure that Jo Ann was welcomed and included in all the excitement a new school year brings. Thanks to Zoraya and Colleen for all the work that they did supporting the week long sub and thank you Jo Ann for stepping up to the challenge of teaching 4th grade
Kids in Action
As you may have seen, a letter to the students of Haskin was composed sharing a problem that was brought to our attention by Mrs. Neufeld. The playground has been littered with trash. In the letter, students were asked to help keep the playground clean by throwing their own trash in the receptacles and cleaning up after other people, if necessary. Well, we have received the most wonderful letters back from some of our fourth-graders. Here are just a couple of examples:
“I’m sorry to hear that our playground is dirty by trash and that the kindergarteners had to clean. Why didn’t you tell us instead of the kindergarten? Well, if I see trash I will clean it and if the kindergarten needs help, I’m here to help. I’m so sad to hear that.” Signed, Your Student, Jacqueline
“I feel bad about the playground. I will prefer to help than leave the playground dirty. So, if I see a playground dirty I am gonna pick up the trash. P.S. If someone throws trash at the new playground, I will tell you. Love, Brian
This just shows the character of our students and the pride they take in our new school. Thanks, also, to Mrs. Hurst for giving them the opportunity to voice their concerns in writing.
Another great way students from various grade levels have contributed to the good of the school is by making the PBIS posters that you see throughout the building. These posters are excellent illustrations of what to do, and what not to do throughout our school. The students have taken ownership of these expectations and they are exhibiting excellent behavior. In fact, we have had only one or two minor incidents on the playground and few orange tickets given to students. They are doing a tremendous job of stepping it up and controlling their behavior. Way to go, students!

Core Beliefs in Action
“Quality planning, instruction, and assessment leads to high achievement for ALL students.”
It is very noticeable at Haskin that all teachers have been planning with purpose. This purpose is to provide quality instruction to all of our students. Teachers at Haskin are creating plans that are aligned to a guaranteed and viable curriculum. They are planning effective lessons with an aligned objective and daily formative assessment. Activities that are done in the classroom are purposeful and relevant. Within the instruction, Haskin Elementary teachers are deliberately planning for student engagement as well as using structures “on the fly.” It is amazing work that is transforming the way we teach.
Thank you all for modeling our core beliefs in your daily planning, instruction and assessment for all students at Haskin Elementary School!
