teachers and students in action
Mrs. Stecken was emulating our core belief that "quality planning instruction and assessment lead to high achievement for all students." Our 4th grade science class was doing excellent work around food chains food and food webs as well as learning about composers and decomposers. The children in Mrs. Stecken's classroom were very engaged and able to apply their knowledge of the food chain to several different sets of animals who live in jungles, oceans level thinking questions. The quality of the lesson was just outstanding and the quality of the student responses was also outstanding. Mrs. Stecken was emulating our core belief that quality planning instruction and assessment lead to high achievement for all students nice work.

Cultural diversity night
Cultural Diversity night was held on Thursday, February 20 from 5 to 7 PM at Center school cafeteria. Families attended several presentations. These included Connect for Health Colorado, English as a Second Language for adults, Migrant GED and regular GED opportunities, How to Support Reading at Home,Migrant Programs Information and The Psychological Development of Children. JoAnn Lopez did a wonderful job organizing the presentations, the facilities, prizes and childcare. Each child who attended, left with a new book. The parents in attendance also left with many resources to help them help their children at home. Families then enjoyed dinner. Thank you to the cafeteria staff for creating a wonderful dinner. The Haskin Elementary students provided entertainment for the families under Mr. Swanson's leadership. The evening was full of learning fun and excitement for our families. Thanks, JoAnn, for all of your hard work and putting this together. We know it wasn't easy. Nice work...you are definitely "committed to excellence in all you do every day!"
Haskin Elementary students prepared a bilingual song called "My Little Donkey" to the delight of all present. |
core beliefs in action
EVERYONE must be committed to excellence in ALL they do EVERY day.
"What do these words make you picture?" There is actually no need to visualize what it looks like when everyone is committed to excellence. One has only to look around Haskin Elementary to see example after example of this core belief being put into practice. It all starts in the office where Brenda Montoya and Lu Ortega welcome parents to the school and talk with them on the phone, supporting communication between school and home. Mrs. Burch takes care of all of us, in a capable and caring way that keeps everyone safe and well.
Lu also works as a Teacher Assistant, along with John Noriega, Sharon Windhorst, Agnes Salazar, and Joyce Trujillo to support teachers and students in various ways. These TA's are essential in providing Lindamood-Bell small group intervention during the day which is so vital to helping our students reach grade-level performance. They also provide small group support to kindergarten and first-grade students during our "flooding" time at these grade levels. And they do all this with a commitment to excellence that makes their work effective.
We have support teachers, Mr. LJ Garcia who provides instruction to our Special Education students, and Ms. JoAnn Lopez who does the same for our English Language learners. Both of these teachers welcome other students into their small groups, as well, targeting individual needs and helping students to learn and grow. Mr. Swanson and Mr. Hawkins plan for and provide high quality instruction that focuses on the arts and physical health and well-being. These teachers are held to the same high standards for planning and instruction as teachers of other content areas, such as math and reading, and they demonstrate a commitment to excellence as they fulfill these responsibilities.
Classroom teachers demonstrate their commitment as they plan and prepare for instruction, day in and day out. They spend time before and after school, as well as on weekends. Teachers test, teach, re-teach, praise, challenge, and support each and every child who enters their classrooms. They care for students' heads and hearts, building relationships with their students that, we believe, will have a lasting impact.
There simply is no way to list all the evidence of the commitment to excellence that is present at Haskin. In the same way that a fish is unaware of the water in which it is swimming, this atmosphere of excellence is part of who we are in this school and in this district. It's simply how we "do business". We could not be more proud of our staff and students for the great work and commitment to excellence that is evident in all you do every day. You rock!
