Classroom teachers work on Curriculum
Grade-level teams met in the commons last Friday morning to continue work matching the Colorado Sample Curriculum with the Focal Point maps. Ted Knight, formerly of Focal Point, was on hand to offer support and advice. Teachers were very thoughtful about the work and they had productive discussions with each other and with Ted.
Ms. JoAnn Lopez arrived at the work session with quite a display of matching items, including a cover for her Mac, a mouse and iPhone cover, and of course, a matching outfit...Stunning!

follow assessments with high quality instruction:
Haskin Elementary is finishing the beginning of the year assessments. DIBELS has been completed in grades K-5, NWEA is completed in 2nd -5th grade, and all of the newly created district quarterly pre-assessments have been completed. All of these assessments provide information for both students and teachers, BUT they cannot mark the end of learning. Instead, assessments must be followed by high-quality, instruction designed to remedy whatever learning errors the assessment identified. To charge ahead knowing that students have not learned certain concepts or skills well would be foolish. Teachers must therefore follow their assessments with instructional alternatives that present those concepts in new ways and engage students in different and more appropriate learning
experiences. We are looking forward to a wonderful year of new learning adventures!

sweeping haskin style:
Our first round of Kinder-5th grade SWEEP is nearly complete. We are working on getting these amazing creations posted for all to read! What does SWEEP do for kids? SWEEP not only improves penmanship, but it develops critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students learn the writing process from plan to finished product, which trickles over into other aspects of learning. Writing also promotes vocabulary and reading development. Since we require students to post, review and give feedback to each other's work, this allows students to both accept and deliver constructive criticism. This is a process that is improving the way we assess writing and deliver instruction based on the results. Please take some time and read the writing on the walls!
