teachers in action:
Colorado has developed new science and social studies assessments which will be administered for the first time in April 2014. These assessments will be computer-based and are designed to measure the Colorado Academic Standards. The science assessments will be administered in grades 5, 8, and once in high school and the social studies assessments will be administered in grades 4, 7 and once in high school. Mrs. Honey Stecken has worked hard all year to prepare our kids for this new science test. Mrs. Stecken performed an in-depth data analysis of where each student is performing in science. She cross checked that data with the CMAS frameworks. She then informed parents of the areas where students need to work. Mrs. Stecken then invited the 5th graders to join "Science Club," a club that will focus on scientific topics that students need to review prior to taking the test. The Science Club is meeting on Monday's from 3:30-5:30. Thank you Mrs. Stecken for going the extra mile for kids!

PBIS
|
Students who are good citizens of our school, who follow the rules inside and outside of class, were rewarded with a PBIS event on March 20th. These students were treated to ice cream floats served by a group of teachers and teacher assistants. While the children were enjoying this treat, they moved around in a Quiz Quiz Trade activity, sharing their answers to various thought-provoking questions. An example is: Your grandmother knitted you a sweater, which you do not like. Do you wear it? Why or why not?
The conversations were rich and the kids had a great time. Many thanks to all who worked to make this activity possible for our students. |
During the 2014 TCAP testing sessions, Haskin Elementary students were rewarded with Smarty Pants tickets. Each student could earn up to two tickets per session. One ticket for using all their time and a second ticket for putting forth their best effort. The Smarty Pants tickets were then placed into a bucket to draw for prizes. A HUGE thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hurst for donating a bike and two airplane rides. Thank you Mrs. Kulp and Mrs. Vance for donating a bike.. This was an excellent way to end the week!

Once again, Haskin Elementary students produced good writing in response to a SWEEP prompt, working through the writing process from planning to publishing. Here, the winners from each grade level posed with their certificates. Students also enjoyed a small monetary award and a sweet treat.
These assessments, posted throughout the school, offer a perspective on how the writing process develops throughout the grade levels. As a result of the good work that was done on the Action Plan, we now have a common way of planning, with common language that students will be able to understand as they move up through the grades. We have seen a significant improvement in the quality of writing our students are doing and with the continued hard work by teachers and students, their skills will continue to increase.

Congratulations Vanessa!
For the first time, we have been able to offer After School Academy class to some of our kindergarteners. Mrs. Martinez is working with seven students on various reading, writing, and math skills. Vanessa Delgado is our first kindergartener to graduate from After School Academy! She worked very hard and met her math and reading goals. Good job, Vanessa, and Mrs. Martinez! We are proud of you!
